Description

How to Achieve Outstanding Responsive and Adaptive Teaching is a course designed to ensure teachers are responding and adapting their teaching and curriculum to meet the needs of every pupil.

This training course has been the most popular over the past year and was designed to help SLTs getting frustrated with the number of worksheets and pre-made lesson plans teachers were printing off and reading like a script. During many lessons Helen observed she found pupils completing the same task, in the same way, despite their very obvious and different learning needs and styles. She also encountered a real unwillingness and lack of understanding about the importance of responding and adapting (differentiate) their teaching.

The course will look in detail at the basics of teaching, learning targets, success criteria and responsive and adaptive teaching (questioning, learning tasks, explanations, independent learning and AFL.) It will also look at how PPA time should really be used which should not involve simply catching up on marking. The course will look at the principles of quality first teaching and responding and adapting their teaching to meet the needs of pupils.

The course sessions cover:

  1. Outstanding Teaching and Learning Cultures – high expectations what they are and what it looks like in practice, staff behaviour and work ethic, mindset and caring enough to make the improvements needed to be an outstanding teacher.
  2. Basic Pedagogy and Subject Specific Pedagogy– a detailed look at how to respond and adapt teaching through explanations, questioning, learning task, independent learning skills and AFL. Staff practically work through the processes for lessons they will be teaching.  This session will also look at subject specific pedagogy and ensuring teachers pick the most appropriate teaching strategy to deepen and ensure understanding.
  3. Engaged and Passive Learners– The difference between outstanding and exceptional teaching is ensuring children are engaged and not passive learners. This session will look at the difference and show how to ensure learners are engaged and not just passively complying.
  4. Ofsted Preparation– how to succeed and excel during an Ofsted inspection as a teacher (and subject leaders if required)

HT Recommendation

I asked Helen to come and deliver her ‘Outstanding Responsive and Adaptive Teaching’ because I was getting frustrated with the number of worksheets and pre-made lesson plans teachers were using and the lack of willingness to respond and adapt (differentiate) their teaching. I was tired of teachers giving out the same old worksheets and textbooks with an ‘anything will do’ attitude. Helen was supreme! She gave out some very strong messages about teaching is not about reading a script, why staff need to live and breathe your vision and rules, not just preach them to the children, then behave badly and not work hard themselves.

It probably sounds like she spent the day telling them off; absolutely not. All was done with an amazing sense of humour, strong messages delivered in an exceptional manner. Helen then looked in detail at the basics of teaching, learning targets, success criteria and responsive and adaptive teaching (questioning, learning tasks, explanations, independent learning and AFL) with staff having to practically plan lessons using the principles of quality first teaching and responding and adapting their teaching to meet the needs of pupils.

Absolutely brilliant training, not only inspired but transformed the way our teaching moved forward.
