Why Some Children Cannot Read
&
What schools can do about it!
Despite endless rounds of interventions, daily reading with an adult and a fortune spent on training and resources, it is a harsh fact that around 40% of children leave our primary schools unable to read. This is a statistic that hasn’t really changed significantly for many years.
As I am sure teachers are only too aware, leaving primary school unable to read will severely limit students access to the secondary curriculum. The statistics for disengagement in secondary education are frightening in relation to how many of those students drop out and cannot read. The majority of young people, who leave education too early, cannot read leading to significantly reduced life chances.
This course is not about blaming teachers and schools for this, but looking at why children cannot read and what schools can do to improve this situation.
This course is not about magic new systems or resources, it is stripping back the teaching of reading, so that EVERY teacher understands the mechanics of learning to read and how to teach reading so that EVERY child can read and nobody gets left behind.
However, it will provide you with lots of practical strategies and resources to help ensure EVERY child leaves your school as a reader.
The course will cover the following:
- Reading – how do we do it?
- Beginning the teaching of reading in the right way – EYFS and beyond
- The child’s mind and reading
- Alphabets and the English Alphabetical Code and Transcription Talk
- Mastering the advanced code of reading, writing and spelling
- Supporting pupils not meeting expectations to catch up and keep up quickly
- High impact successful catch up programmes
- Parents role in this process!
