We attended Helen Youngman’s How to Achieve Exceptional Oracy training shortly after the introduction of the new Ofsted framework and it proved to be one of the most valuable professional development investments we have made.

 

The training went far beyond theory. Helen provided a clear vision of what exceptional oracy looks like in practice and, more importantly, exactly how to implement it across a whole school. The free Whole-School Oracy Framework was outstanding. It gave us a structured progression model from EYFS to Year 6, practical classroom strategies, monitoring tools and a clear implementation plan. Within a relatively short period of time, we saw a noticeable improvement in pupils’ confidence, vocabulary, discussion skills and ability to articulate their thinking.

 

During our recent Ofsted inspection, oracy featured much more prominently than we had anticipated. Inspectors spoke to leaders, teachers and pupils about how communication skills were developed across the curriculum. Thanks to the training and framework, every member of staff was able to explain our approach with confidence and consistency. Inspectors were particularly impressed by the quality of pupil discussion, the explicit teaching of vocabulary and the clear progression evident across the school.

 

The inspection team commented positively on how well pupils communicated their learning and how effectively oracy had been embedded into everyday classroom practice. Without Helen’s training and the accompanying framework, I am certain we would not have been able to demonstrate the same level of coherence, implementation and impact.
